FAA BasicMed Pilot Physicals

What is an FAA BasicMed Pilot Physical?

Unlike traditional FAA medical exams, the BasicMed physical provides an alternative path for private and recreational pilots who want to fly without undergoing the rigorous FAA medical certification process. This option is especially beneficial for pilots who no longer qualify for higher-tier medical certifications but still meet the health standards necessary for safe flight.

With a BasicMed, You Can Fly Aircraft That Are:

  • Authorized under federal law to carry not more than 7 occupants.
  • Have a maximum certificated takeoff weight of not more than 12,500 pounds.

Under The Following Conditions:

  • You are not carrying more than 6 passengers
  • You are operating under VFR or IFR, within the United States, at or below 18,000 feet MSL, not exceeding 250 knots.
  • The flight is not for compensation/hire.

(See The FAA’s BasicMed FAQ Page for More Info)

What Does the FAA BasicMed Pilot Physical Include?

The FAA Basic Pilot Physical includes a comprehensive review of medical history, a physical examination, and screenings for vision, hearing, and cardiovascular health. It will also assess balance, neurological function, and mental health to ensure you can safely operate an aircraft.

Pilots must also complete an online medical education course every two years to stay compliant with FAA regulations. By maintaining regular medical evaluations, pilots can ensure they meet aviation safety standards and continue flying with confidence.

FAA BasicMed FAQs

What is an FAA BasicMed physical?

An FAA BasicMed physical is a medical exam that allows eligible pilots to fly under BasicMed regulations instead of holding a traditional FAA medical certificate. It includes a health history review and a physical exam performed by a state-licensed physician.

Who qualifies for BasicMed?

To qualify for BasicMed, you must…

  • Have held a valid FAA medical certificate after July 14, 2006
  • Be flying an aircraft authorized to carry up to six occupants and weighing 6,000 pounds or less
  • Not be flying for compensation or hire
  • Complete the BasicMed online medical education course every 24 months
  • Undergo a BasicMed physical exam every 48 months

What does the BasicMed physical include?

The exam involves…

  • A review of your medical history
  • A physical exam covering key health areas such as vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and neurological function
  • Completion of the FAA BasicMed Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist (CMEC) by the our examiner

How often do I need a BasicMed physical?

You need to complete a BasicMed physical every 48 months. Additionally, you must take the online BasicMed course every 24 months.

Can any doctor perform a BasicMed exam?

Yes, any state-licensed physician (MD or DO) can perform the exam and complete the FAA BasicMed checklist. The physician does not need to be an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).

How do I submit my BasicMed exam results to the FAA?

After your physician completes the Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist (CMEC), you must keep it in your personal records. You do not need to submit it to the FAA. However, you must complete the required online BasicMed course and retain your completion certificate.

What happens if I don’t pass the BasicMed exam?

If a physician determines that you do not meet the necessary health requirements for BasicMed, you may need to seek further medical evaluation or apply for an FAA medical certificate through an AME if eligible.

How can I schedule a BasicMed physical?

You can book an appointment through our online scheduling system or by contacting our office directly. We offer flexible scheduling to accommodate pilots’ needs.
