What is CDL Self Certification & How is it done in RI & MA?
What is Self Certification?
Self-certification is the process where a commercial driver declares to their state’s licensing agency what type of driving they will be doing.
This helps the state determine which medical requirements apply to the driver.
Why is Self Certification Important?
Submitting the self-certification form is a federal requirement for maintaining your CDL. The DMV (or RMV) uses this information to determine the necessary medical requirements for your CDL.
Types of Commerce and Their Requirements
Both Rhode Island and Massachusetts offer four options for self-certification…
#1 – Interstate Non-Excepted
You must meet Federal DOT medical card requirements.
Applies to drivers operating across state lines who are not exempt from DOT medical requirements.
#2 – Interstate Excepted
You do not need to meet Federal DOT medical card requirements.
Applies to drivers operating across state lines but exempt from DOT medical requirements.
#3 – Intrastate Non-Excepted
You must meet state-specific medical requirements.
Applies to drivers operating solely within the state who are not exempt from medical requirements.
#4 – Intrastate Excepted
You do not need to meet state-specific medical requirements.
Applies to drivers operating solely within the state and exempt from medical requirements.
How to Complete Self Certification
Complete the self-certification form provided by the Rhode Island DMV or the Massachusetts RMV and ensure you select the correct type of commerce to avoid any issues with maintaining your CDL.
Understanding and completing the self-certification process correctly is essential to keeping your CDL valid and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
