Where To Get a DOT Physical Exam
Another very common question we run into is drivers asking where they can get their DOT Physical, particularly since many drivers are on the road so often. Below, we provide answers to that question and also some helpful info that you may need should you be getting your DOT Physical performed out of state. As always, if you have any questions be sure to give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.
Can I Get a DOT Physical in Another State?
Absolutely. A DOT Physical is a federally standardized exam, meaning you can get one in any state in the country. This is particularly important because oftentimes commercial drivers may be away from their home state for a long period of time, and have an expiring medical certificate.
Self Certification May Still Be Required in Your Home State
While the actual physical exam can be performed elsewhere, you will still need to update your State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA) so they are aware that you have completed the physical and do not downgrade your license, and to adjust your self-certification category if needed.
According to the FMCSA, “CDL holders, who are found driving in a category other than one to which they self-certified, are subject to suspension or revocation of their commercial driving privileges. CDL drivers, who do not update the expiration date of their ME Certificate with their State, will have their commercial driving privileges downgraded, and will not be eligible to drive a commercial motor vehicle that requires a CDL.”
If you need more information on this, see our page about Self Certification.
Who Can Perform a DOT Physical?
Only FMCSA Certified Medical Examiners are able to perform a DOT Physical. You can verify the status of a Certified Medical Examiner on the FMSCA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners website.
East Coast DOT Physicals has Certified Medical Examiners at all of our locations.
