The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires commercial drivers to have periodic physical examinations to ensure that the driver can safely operate a commercial motor vehicle. For drivers with kidney disease, this may involve more documentation from the practitioner treating him or her for the kidney disease confirming that the kidney disease is diagnosed and stable as well as ensuring that treatment is adequate, effective, and safe. This helps the medical examiner assess whether the condition is being well –managed and unlikely to impair driving ability.

Kidney disease often correlates with high blood pressure, which is a critical factor in DOT physicals. If blood pressure is managed by medication, the blood pressure reading must be below 159/99 and will require a yearly DOT physical.

If you have kidney disease bring medical records from your primary care physician or specialist indicating the stability and safety of your condition.
